A child driving can have serious consequences for other road users.

An 8 year old child was found driving a car in a residential area in Vereeniging, yesterday. In a video, which has been widely circulated on social media platforms, the child can be seen behind the wheel of an upmarket SUV, who could hardly see over the steering wheel. At some point the child was chatting to residents on the side of the road with his one arm casually hanging out of the driver’s side window. When asked, the boy said his father gave him the car to drive. One of the bystanders said he will follow the boy back to his father. The boy then sped off in the vehicle. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla said, the parent of any child driving on a public road, will be prosecuted. According to Fihla, a child under the age of 10 years cannot be arrested, and a court would normally only prosecute the parent.

In such a case, the child will be referred to the Children’s Court.
