ActionSA calls for Emfuleni Council to be dissolved

VANDERBIJLPARK - ActionSA is submitting a written request to Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC today, requesting that the Emfuleni Municipal council be dissolved, and an administrator be appointed in accordance with section 139 of the South African constitution. ActionSA Gauteng Chairperson, Bongani Baloyi, said in a statement the coalition of doom at Emfuleni Local Municipality - headed by the ANC - has for years struggled to deliver the most basic services, such as electricity and water provision, while its finances continued to deteriorate. This recently led to Eskom attaching vehicles belonging to the waste management and traffic departments to cover the municipality's R1.3 billion debt. Meanwhile, the municipality has already been under administration since 2018 for its ballooning irregular expenditure bill of over R1 billion, but the intervention has yielded little results and instead, service delivery continued to decline. Baloyi further explains the situation has grown so dire that residents and businesses stopped paying the municipality due to its failure to deliver services - with residents now owing the municipality more than R8 billion. ActionSA believes a capable administrator should be appointed to stabilise the municipality's finances and urgently provide services to the residents in the community, while long-term solutions for the Emfuleni Municipality are found.
