COVID-19: Another two people have died of the coronavirus in South Africa, bringing the death toll to five. The latest victims are a 46-year-old woman from Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal who was admitted to a hospital with chronic asthma and hypertension, and a 79-year-old Gauteng man who was taken to a private hospital on the West Rand on Saturday.
Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize announced last night that the country’s total amount of cases had reached 1 353, with 633 cases in Gauteng. He says the current number is much lower than the government’s projections of between 4 000 and 6 000 cases by the beginning of April. Mkhize points out that the reduction of traffic in trains and taxis has helped to contain the spread of the virus.
