DA wins Sedibeng District Municipality for the first time since dawn of democracy

VAAL TRIANGLE - For the first time in the history of democracy, the ANC has lost control of the Sedibeng District Municipality - which umbrellas the Midvaal-, Lesedi- and Emfuleni local municipalities - after walking out during the voting process. The Democratic Alliance subsequently won the mayoral seat after the DA’s Tebogo Tlhokwe was elected on Friday. The ANC walked out because it did not want to accept that the Freedom Front Plus's Hein van der Lith was elected as Chief Whip with 25 votes after beating the ANC's candidate, Emmarentia Moloi, who received 24 votes. In view of the recent judgment on the Tshwane matters, and in terms of section 41 of the Municipal Structures Act, the remaining councillors, who formed a quorum, elected a speaker. The acting speaker called for nominations for the executive mayor and only one DA nomination was received, duly seconded and accepted.
