Elderly farmer dies in a helicopter crash in Parys

PARYS - The Office Of The Provincial Commissioner in the Free State issued a statement confirming that an elderly farmer lost his life after his helicopter crashed in Parys, just south of the Vaal Triangle, on Monday. The pilot, identified as 71-year-old Jurie Wessels, died after his helicopter hit power lines as he was about to land. It is alleged that Wessels was on his way to Rockridge Farm in Parys from Kroonstad to deliver samples. He was flying a Hughes 268C helicopter with registration number ZT-RDS. Wessels was unfortunately declared dead on the scene. He was alone in the helicopter. National Civil Aviation Authority was informed and summoned to the scene. The deceased was taken to Sasolburg State Mortuary where a postmortem will be conducted.
