ELM to eradicate illegal dumping sites

VAAL TRIANGLE - The Environmental Management and Planning Department of Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) is clearing mushrooming illegal dumping sites across the municipality. The municipality says the department is also working towards eradicating backlogs in the collection of household waste. According to the municipality, the advent of Covid-19 and a shortage of compactor trucks are some of the contributing factors to backlogs in waste management in the municipality. They add that the shortage of resources has also made it difficult for them to communicate and follow a regular schedule, often collecting waste on a bi-weekly basis, where possible. However, the Gauteng Provincial Government has committed R52m for the provision of waste compactor trucks, a move aimed at improving the collection of household waste in the area.
