EMFULENI - The Democratic Alliance says it is shocked to learn that the ANC-led Emfuleni Local Municipality has spent more than R 4.5 million on grave digging. According to a press release issued by the DA, the information was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lebogang Maile. According to Maile, the grave-digging contract was awarded to various private businesses, due to the fact that the municipality doesn’t have the capacity to render the grave-digging services internally. The DA says it is worrying that ELM, which is already facing serious cash flow problems, continues to outsource services that could be done internally. DA Constituency Head for Emfuleni North, Kingsol Chabalala, says the money could have been better spent on equipment and tools needed for grave digging, as well as creating employment opportunities for local residents. The DA further calls on MEC Maile to clamp down on unnecessary outsourcing in Emfuleni, as part of the interventions to save the municipality.
