VAAL TRIANGLE - The Emfuleni Local Municipality in the Vaal area has said that service delivery has not been affected by the non-payment of salaries to its employees. Municipal workers, who were meant to be paid on 25 September, still did not receive their salaries by last night, which is almost two weeks later. This comes after Eskom attached the municipality's bank accounts to ensure it pays R8 billion it owes to the power utility. According to reports, some municipal workers have stopped working because they cannot afford to get to work. Other reports stated that some municipal workers protested in Vereeniging recently because they have not been paid. However, Emfuleni spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni says that service delivery is not affected. Sangweni spoke to Newzroom Afrika, where he said they met with various roleplayers like Cogta minister Velenkosini Hlabisa, finance minister Enoch Godongwana, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi and minister of electricity and energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, on Tuesday to discuss the situation.
