Five vehicle theft suspects arrested after shootout in Vanderbijlpark

VANDERBIJLPARK - The SA Police Service says five suspects were arrested yesterday, 15 February 2022, for the possession of suspected stolen vehicle and possession of car theft implements. Police spokesperson, Col Dimakatso Sello, said in a statement members of the Vanderbijlpark Task Team received a complaint of suspicious vehicle with occupants trying to steal a bakkie at Carter Street in Vanderbijlpark. Sello said the members chased the vehicle with the assistance of patrollers. The chase continued until they reached Sharpeville policing precinct, where members blocked the vehicle and suspects started running on foot to an open field. Sello said a shootout between the suspects and the police ensued and one suspect was shot on the leg while four other suspects surrendered. Paramedics attended to the injured suspect and afterwards he was handed back to the police. Sello said all five arrested suspects aged between 30 and 45 years are expected to appear before Vanderbijlpark Magistrates' Court soon on charges of possession of suspected stolen vehicle and car breaking implements.
