Foreign nationals attacked the Vereeniging SAPS over confiscated illicit cigarettes.

The Vereeniging SAPS arrested three suspects in a raid, in Vereeniging, last week Wednesday. Police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda said the police reacted on an intelligence received on illicit cigarettes concealed in some shops in Vereeniging. According to Funda, following the tip-off, police officers operationalized the intel and during the operation, illicit cigarettes amounting to the value of R800 000 rand was found and confiscated. Funda said after the confiscation of the goods, dozens of foreign shop owners convoyed to the police station, where they stormed and assaulted police officers, throwing rocks and bottles at them. A high-ranking police officer was injured during the mayhem. Rubber bullets were used to disperse the crowd. Traffic was disrupted and motorists had to use alternative routes to enter and exit the city centre. Two suspects were arrested for the fake cigarettes and one suspect was arrested for attacking a police officer.
