Government looking into driving licenses being valid for 10 years

VAAL TRIANGLE - Vaal Triangle and other SA motorists might soon only have to renew their driver’s licenses every 10 years instead of the current 5-year renewal period. This as the Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, says he is looking into the 10-year period in terms of driver’s license renewals. Mbalula gave an update on driver’s license card renewals yesterday. He says he has commissioned the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to look into the renewal timeframe and report back to him. Mbalula said the research will look at the correlation between the renewal period and safety on the country’s roads and what factors should be taken into account if they are to revise the current five-year validity period. He said this work is already underway and will be concluded by 30 April 2022.
