HEIDELBERG - Gauteng police have arrested a farmer and 97 illegal miners at a Heidelberg farm. A team of specialised units stormed the property after receiving information on illegal mining activities. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the team also seized mining equipment and 570 rounds of ammunition. The suspects, who are between the ages of 18 and 35, are all Lesotho nationals and the majority of them are in the country illegally. The ammunition was sent for ballistic testing to determine if it had been used in any previous crimes. Colonel Mathe, says all suspects will appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court.
