MEC launches Green Doors initiative in Eikenhof to combat Gender Based Violence

VAAL TRIANGLE - Gauteng Department of Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko today launched the Green Doors initiative Eikenhof, in the Sedibeng region of the Vaal Triangle, as part of the Women’s month programme. Green doors are safe sites that are situated within five kilometres to the local police stations that offer victims of gender-based violence services such as emotional containment, trauma debriefing and referral to the nearest police station to open a case. The department said the unveiling of Green Doors commenced in Eikenhof and will conclude in Evaton, Southern corridor. Mazibuko said at the event that it is important that they are there because it is their department’s mandate to bring services to the community, especially women and children, who are victims of gender-based violence. She said all victims of gender-based violence are entitled to come to the green door since it is their link to their nearest police station. Mazibuko encouraged women to report any form of abuse regardless of what the family or community says.
