MIDVAAL - The Midvaal Local Municipality issued a notice expressing their condolences after the newly elected Mayor of Johannesburg died in a car crash on Saturday evening while travelling on the Golden Highway. Matongo had been on a voter registration campaign along with African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa in Soweto. Two others were also killed while two protectors are recovering in hospital. Midvaal spokesperson, Simon Ratlhagane, yesterday said in a statement their municipality have been silenced by the death of a leader and activist who was always committed to the vision of building a prosperous society. Over the years, Cllr Matongo served both the City of Joburg and the ANC in various capacities. Midvaal Executive Mayor, Bongani Baloyi, said he would like to express heartfelt condolences, on behalf of the Midvaal Local Municipality, to the family, friends, broader community as well as the ANC on the untimely passing of Cllr Matongo. Baloyi said in him we have lost a great servant of the people. He said they pray that the Almighty God grants the family patience and strength to deal with this huge loss. Midvaal municipality says death has once again robbed South Africa of a selfless and courageous leader and a freedom fighter.
