VAAL TRIANGLE - President Cyril Ramaphosa last night announced that the biggest part of the country should revert to level 3 of lockdown regulations at the end of the month, but that certain areas with a big concentration of the coronavirus will stay on level 4. He addressed the country for the first time in almost three weeks last night. A total of 219 people have died of the disease thus far, while more than 12 000 people contracted Covid-19. More than 4000 have already recovered.
But Ramaphosa says current estimates point to the fact that up to 80 000 South Africans could have been infected if it wasn’t for the strict regulations. He says only 181 out of every one million people in the country became sick while in countries such as the United States, Britain, Spain, Italy and Singapore the figure was between 2 400 and 4 600 per one million. Ramaphosa says South Africans demonstrated great courage, resilience and responsibility, and thanked citizens for their sacrifices.
