New car theft scam targets new vehicle owners

VAAL TRIANGLE - Vaal Triangle residents should be vigilant of a new car theft scam. According to the CEO of the Insurance Crime Bureau, Garth de Klerk, criminals execute the scam by contacting unsuspecting vehicle owners, posing as officials representing the car manufacturer and convince the owners that their vehicle is part of a batch being recalled due to serious malfunctions, often following up with a spoof e-mail, arranging to pick-up the vehicle. The warning was issued after the ICB noted a significant increase in similar cases. De Klerk advised people to limit the amount of personal information shared on social media and telephonically, as criminals use this build a detailed profile on their victims. Further, residents should check with the manufacturer or dealer directly to verify the legitimacy of the recall. Any suspicious calls should also be reported to authorities. PHOTO: (Supplied)
