No forensic DNA analyses have been done so far this year

VAAL TRIANGLE - South Africa’s backlog on the processing of DNA for forensic purposes stands at almost 173 000 cases. The head of the National Forensic Science Laboratories, Edward Ngokha, has admitted that no DNA evidence at all has been processed this year. Parliament’s police committee heard that in some cases, families have to wait up to two years to bury loved ones who were victims of crime. The committee has now ordered the newly appointed National Forensic Oversight and Ethics Board to urgently act on the dysfunctional state of the laboratories.
