VAAL TRIANGLE - Rand Water on Tuesday met with the Executive Mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Cllr Gift Moerane, on the municipality’s debt settlement agreement with the water body. Rand Water spokesperson, Justice Mohale, said in a statement the municipality is currently indebted to Rand Water for an amount in excess of R1.1 billion. Mohale said Rand Water had reduced the water pressure to the Municipality by 20% as a credit control action to compel the Municipality to settle amounts due to Rand Water. However, he said the municipality has previously failed to honour agreements made in a series of meetings. Emfuleni has now signed a Debt Settlement Agreement with Rand Water on 11 December 2020 which outlines its intention to settle the amounts due to Rand Water. Mohale said Tuesday’s meeting concluded with Rand Water intent on continuing with the current water pressure reduction in Emfuleni. In addition, Rand Water has developed a Water Use Efficiency Strategy and is advocating for its adoption by Emfuleni. Mohale said the water body is of the firm view that the urgent implementation of this strategy will save the municipality large volumes of water and money.
