SA workers paid the legal minimum wage will see above-inflation increases soon
VAAL TRIANGLE - Vaal Triangle and other South African workers paid the legal minimum will see above-inflation increases soon, according to a new plan derived by the Department of Employment and Labour. The National Minimum Wage Commission has gazetted a new medium-term target for the minimum wage. This will see domestic workers take home approximately R4,000 per month. The commission says the proposed adjustment should be in line with the consumer price index. Labour lawyer Michael Bagraim says the national minimum wage is destructive. He said we have almost 40% unemployment in South Africa; in fact, the real minimum wage in South Africa is naught rand per hour. Bagraim says at the end of the day, employers are looking to cut down their staffing, because it is costing them too much.
