The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that schools will not reopen on 27 January. The Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Reginah Mhaule, says the reopening of schools has been postponed by two weeks. Mhaule spoke on behalf of the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, who is still on sick leave. She spoke at a media conference in which she discussed the schools’ readiness after the COVID-19 pandemic. Mhuale says the decision to delay the reopening of schools was made after several consultations with scientists and teachers’ unions. Schools will now open on 15 February for pupils but teachers will be required to return on 1 February.
