South Africans urged to ignore rumors of current lockdown changes

Government this morning urged all South Africans to ignore messages doing the rounds regarding lockdown level changes, as the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) would only be meeting next week. Some citizens have received voice notes and texts claiming that an announcement of a stricter lockdown by President Cyril Ramaphosa was imminent. The Director-General of Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Phumla Williams, took to Twitter this morning, asking that message doing the rounds on any level changes be ignored. She confirmed that the NCCC would only be meeting next week on the 29th on June. Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane did, however, said this morning that she would be meeting with the Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) tomorrow to discuss the response needed for the COVID-19 surge the country is currently experiencing. Kubayi-Ngubane said the MAC has already submitted its recommendations, with the meeting set to focus on the concerns it has raised and the interventions that need to be made at a national and provincial level.
