VAAL TRIANGLE - Amid reports of a successful 2019 with bloodstock levels remaining adequate throughout the year, the SA National Blood Service has issued an urgent call for blood donors to come forward in the New Year. The SANBS says in a New Year's statement that well over a million blood products were issued to patients requiring blood transfusions in 2019, thanks to the loyalty of its regular blood donors and the increasing number of South Africans who have started donating. However, during the first part of 2020, blood stocks have for the first time in many months dropped below the ideal level of 5 days cover due to the holiday period and associated decrease in blood donations. The SANBS is encouraging the public and current blood donors to find time this New Year to donate blood and help ensure another year of sufficient life-saving blood products. Three-thousand 500 donations are required daily to meet the demand of patients. For more information on where to donate blood visit their website www.sanbs.org.za.
