BREAKING: The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in Vanderbijlpark says one of its staff members has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in ICU. VUT’s Mike Khuboni said in a statement that as soon as they received the news, the Human Resource (HR), Finance and Information Technology (IT) buildings – where the staff member had been – were isolated and members of staff were evacuated. Employees in HR, Finance and IT, as well as a labour representative who had been incontact with the affected employee, were advised to undergo COVID-19 testing. Khuboni says to date, eight staff members have tested negative for the virus and the results of eight more members of staff are expected by today, 18 May. He says the three office blocks, including the restrooms, will be sanitized during this week, starting from today. VUT management urged all members of staff and students not to panic as the situation is firmly under control. Khuboni said the Executive Director HR is in constant contact with the infected employee and the report is that the employee is making satisfactory progress.
Khuboni further encouraged members of staff to collect their tools of trade and to do strictly in accordance with the prescribed COVID-19 protocols. However, he said members of staff in HR, IT and Finance should not collect their tools of trade or attempt to enter the campus and are advised to work from home until further notice. Management will keep staff and students informed of developments on this matter.
