VUT calls special council meeting after allegations of sexual grooming

VAAL TRIANGLE - The Vaal University of Technology’s newly inaugurated Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Gordon Zide, has called a special council meeting after allegations of sexual assault, implicating one of its members, have emerged. This comes just a day after the ANC in Gauteng placed Emfuleni Mayor Simon Mofokeng on special leave following allegations of the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. The ANCYL’s Regional Treasurer for Sedibeng, Jabu Maitse, has called on VUT management to do the same and to suspend Mofokeng from the university’s council, or to ask him to resign. He says these allegations could have a negative impact on VUT’s reputation. He adds that according to the council’s statute, Mofokeng should’ve been removed when he was redeployed from Sedibeng District Municipality to Emfuleni. Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has questioned why Mofokeng was placed on special leave and not immediately removed from his position as ANC Sedibeng Regional Chairperson and fired as Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality. DA constituency head for Emfuleni, Kingsol Chabalala, says by placing Mofokeng on special leave the party has shown their blatant disregard towards the victim who experienced immense trauma.
