VAAL TRIANGLE - The Emfuleni Local Municipality says more than 70 houses in Sebokeng, Vaal Triangle, have been severely affected by flooding after heavy rains on Sunday. Municipal spokesperson, Stanley Gaba, said in a statement that municipal officials from Disaster Management Departments of Emfuleni and Sedibeng District Municipality visited the affected areas early on Monday morning to assess the situation. Gaba said the floods caused massive damage, eroding the road network in some areas and destroying retaining walls in many of the homes in Zone 6 and Residensia areas. Other surrounding low-lying areas including Zones 3 and 13 were also affected by storm-water making its way into residents’ homes. EWN reports the municipality will give 13 families who have been displaced by floods in Sebokeng food and blankets. Municipal officials who visited the area say some families would be temporarily housed at a nearby school. Gaba said the school is open and everything is in order. He said they were only waiting for people to come in with beds as well.
