Vaal motorists urged to avoid the Golden Highway this morning

March 15, 2019

ALERT: Vaal Triangle and other Gauteng motorists have been warned to avoid the Golden Highway near Lenasia, north of the Vaal Triangle, this morning. SABC News reports this is due to protest action on the route. According to the report, around 300 protestors have barricaded the highway and nearby roads with burning tyres and other objects. News24 reports residents of Hospital Hills and Phumula Mqashi informal settlements are barricading the highway demanding services. However, Lenasia community member Shirley Brijlal, told EWN she understands this is part of a planned protest ahead of a meeting with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) this morning. The community member said this will culminate in a meeting at the Lenasia South City Centre today. She said as far as she is aware, roads have been blocked and at this point, there is only one exit out to Lenasia. Lenasia South police are monitoring the road.
