VAAL TRIANGLE - The Emfuleni Local Municipality says the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has released R150 million in funding for the rehabilitation of the Vaal River System (VRS). The municipality said in a statement the funding will help repair sewer pump-stations and go a long way in ending sewer spillages in Emfuleni Local Municipality – in residential areas and into the Vaal River System. ELM said the department has appointed an entity of Ekurhuleni Metro, ERWAT, as an implementing agent. Emfuleni says an implementation protocol was signed on 29 March 2019 by all stakeholders, paving the way for a collaborative effort into the rehabilitation of sanitation infrastructure in ELM. According to the municipality, the funding will be used to urgently repair pump-stations eight, nine, and 10. The Union Street rising main and two other pump-stations in Sharpeville and Sebokeng will also be prioritized. Aged municipal infrastructure led to increased sewer spillages in Emfuleni Local Municipality in recent years, leaving residents frustrated and environmental activists fuming.
