VEREENIGING - The Vereeniging SAPS says 10 Ethiopian nationals were arrested after attacking victims of an accident between a taxi patrol car and a motorcycle at the corner of Leslie and Smuts Roads in Vereeniging in January. Police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda, yesterday said in a statement that the group attacked the occupants of the motor vehicle after the accident on Wednesday 10 January 2024. Two of the occupants and the motorcycle driver fled the scene, but the driver and one passenger remained, leaving them to be robbed by the Ethiopian men of their personal firearms. The suspects then fled the scene. Funda says a case of common robbery was opened and investigated after which 10 suspects were arrested and two firearms recovered from two of the suspects. The docket and the suspects were taken to court and the case was postponed. Funda says the suspects and the victims made an out of court settlement, but because the charge of possession of unlicensed fire arm is a state case, the court proceeded. The court ordered four of the suspects to be deported as they are in the country illegally, and two of the accused were declared unfit to possess a firearm. The SAPS reminded the community to report all crime activities that they might be aware of anonymously to crime stop on 0861 10111 or report using the MYSAPS App. Information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
