SEDIBENG - A total of 110 suspects were arrested in the Sedibeng district during Operation Shanela, a high-impact crime-combating blitz led by Acting Sedibeng District Commissioner, Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba, on Saturday, 12 July 2025.
The operation, focused on Sebokeng, targeted crime hotspots, enforced liquor laws, and traced wanted suspects. Backed by multiple SAPS units and partners, police arrested individuals for offenses including murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, assault, theft, drug possession, fraud, and drunk driving. Detectives had already secured 79 arrests before the operation, mainly linked to gender-based violence. An additional 31 suspects were arrested on the day, with a major roadblock on Moshoeshoe Street leading to the detention of drunk drivers and undocumented foreign nationals. Over 900 individuals and 500 vehicles were searched, one illegal liquor outlet was shut down, and over 66 litres of alcohol confiscated. SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane praised the success and urged the public to keep reporting crime via SAPS hotlines and the MySAPS app.
