28 Murders in schools as minister plans safety committees to stop violence

VAAL TRIANGLE - The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, says there were as many as 28 murders reported in schools across the country during the 2023/24 financial year. She says 46% of these murders involve student-on-student violence. The minister says police data also shows that 11,000 burglaries were recorded in schools. Gwarube says safety committees will be formed that draw all sectors of the school community to ensure the safety of learners.
