BOIPATONG - A distressing incident unfolded Tuesday 24 October, when 89 female learners from various schools in Boipatong, near Vanderbijlpark, were taken to hospital due to a suspected case of mass food poisoning. The Citizen reports the students fell ill after consuming snacks, allegedly looted from a local spaza shop, and sold by a hawker at the Lebohang Primary School and Dr Nhlapo Primary School in Sebokeng. Sedibeng Health spokesperson Porcia Gibson, says the 89 children received immediate medical attention for symptoms that included vomiting and stomach pains. According to Gibson hey were transported to Sebokeng and Kopanong hospitals. Fortunately, all the children are now in stable condition and are expected to recover fully. The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona says medical tests will be conducted to investigate the source and cause of the illness. According to Mabona, Psychosocial support officials provided necessary support to the affected students. The education department wished all the learners a speedy recovery.
