SEBOKENG - The Sebokeng SAPS is investigating a heartbreaking case of child abandonment after a newborn baby was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 10 June 2025, in Zone 14, Sebokeng. Passersby on their way to work found the infant lying alone on the ground and immediately alerted authorities. The incident occurred during freezing temperatures recorded across the Vaal Triangle, where thermometers dropped to below zero, raising serious concerns about the baby’s exposure to the cold. Emergency services responded swiftly, and the baby was taken to Sebokeng Hospital, where medical staff are providing urgent care. The infant is believed to be only a few days old. Doctors report the baby is stable and under close observation. Police have opened a case and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in tracing the child's parents or guardians. In a moving gesture, residents named the infant Sechaba – meaning “a nation”.
