An elderly person from Sasolburg arrested after removing an ANC poster

SASOLBURG - The Sasolburg SAPS arrested a 64-year-old from Sasolburg after she was caught on camera knocking an ANC election poster from a tree with her cane. A video has been shared on social media showing a woman holding an election poster with Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa's face. The 64-year-old was arrested and charged for breach of the Electoral Act 73 of 1998. According to the Act, the illegal removal of an election poster is prohibited and is considered an act of vandalism. The Free State provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says it is essential to respect the democratic process and allow political parties and candidates to display material as permitted by law. The elderly woman was released, and warned to appear in court tomorrow, May 22.
