ANC holds Ward 35 amid MK surge in Sebokeng by-election

SEBOKENG - The ANC narrowly retained control of Ward 35 in Emfuleni during a by-election on 23 July, but the vote revealed shifting political tides in Sebokeng.

ANC candidate Chakane Petrus Mohlammme secured just 38% of the vote—down from 54% in 2021. The newly formed MK Party emerged as a major contender, with candidate Sajini David Tshabalala earning 21%, placing second in this traditional ANC stronghold. a local political analyst observing the election, Sipho Dlamini said this result shows a township that is no longer voting out of loyalty and that residents are demanding change. The DA and Patriotic Alliance each claimed 12%, while the EFF plummeted to 8% from 22% in the previous election. Voter turnout dropped to 37%, reflecting growing political fatigue. The result signals a possible political realignment in the Vaal region as residents grow frustrated with unmet promises. With 2026 municipal elections approaching, pressure mounts on the ANC to address service delivery or risk further losses.
