VAAL TRIANGLE - The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters of Southern Africa has proposed a temporary import duty rebate to combat severe chicken shortages, exacerbated by the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak. This measure aims to alleviate supply shortages and cushion vulnerable communities from rising costs. The association’s CEO Paul Matthew recommends reducing import duties for frozen bone-in and boneless chicken. Matthew also advocates for zero-rating chicken offal, a staple for low-income households.
