SASOLBURG - Tensions are rising in Sasolburg over growing concerns about environmental and infrastructure risks linked to large housing projects. Residents and civil society groups warn that developments, including the R3.7-billion housing expansion in Metsimaholo, are moving ahead without sufficient sewage, water, and road infrastructure. There are also increasing complaints about polluted waterways, including sewage spilling into the Leeuspruit and leaks affecting local green spaces, suggesting that environmental assessments and maintenance are inadequate. Youth protests have erupted at major housing sites, citing a lack of transparency in local employment opportunities and fears that the projects could put further strain on already overloaded municipal services. Municipal officials are being urged to halt these developments until proper environmental impact studies are conducted, necessary infrastructure upgrades are in place, and communities are fully consulted.
