Construction resumes on R82 between De Deur and Walkerville after major delays

SEDIBENG - The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has resumed construction on the R82, the Old Vereeniging Road between De Deur and Walkerville in the Sedibeng District after significant delays. The project was stalled due to the underperformance of previous consultants, but a new contractor is now on-site, and the work is being fast-tracked. Completion is expected by October 2026. Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela acknowledged poor project oversight within government infrastructure developments, citing weak follow-through after project handovers as a key issue. According to Diale-Tlabela, one of the major issues identified was the lack of follow-up after a contractor was handed a project, a gap that, if addressed earlier, could have revealed the contractor’s unsuitability for the job. The department is now prioritising accountability to ensure timely delivery of essential road infrastructure for communities in the Sedibeng region.
