Eleven Meyerton officers to face charges of corruption and theft

MEYERTON - Eleven police officers, including a Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel, are set to be prosecuted over a corruption case stemming from a July 2021 incident in Meyerton. On 4 July, 2021 at 16:00, a Chinese national and his father were stopped along Neethling Street in Meyerton, by officers driving an unmarked white Ford double cab. The officers accused the pair of unlawfully selling liquor during the lockdown. Despite a search of their vehicle yielding no illegal items, they were forcibly escorted to their liquor store. Alcohol worth R600,000 was confiscated without being recorded, while R700,000 in cash was allegedly stolen. The victims were falsely accused of bribery, handcuffed, and arrested. The police officers reportedly damaged the store’s video surveillance system and stole the hard drive, but backup footage revealed the evidence. Following an investigation by the Gauteng Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled for the officers’ prosecution. They are set to appear at the Vereeniging Magistrate Court on January 23, 2025.
