VANDERBIJLPARK - The Emfuleni Local Municipality has issued a stern warning about the widespread use of counterfeit permits among spaza shop and food-handling business operators, particularly foreign nationals. According to the municipality, investigations have revealed that several business approvals were fraudulently obtained. Anita Sehlabo, Acting Manager for Communications, Marketing, Branding, and Event Management, confirmed that some applications were processed without proper authorization, raising concerns of internal malpractice. If municipal officials are found guilty, disciplinary action will be taken in line with the South African Local Government Bargaining Council’s procedures. The municipality has emphasized its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and warns that businesses operating under fake permits will face legal consequences. The deadline for legitimate permit applications was February 28, 2025. Business operators are urged to ensure compliance by visiting the Tourism Office in Vanderbijlpark or contacting the municipality directly.
