VAALDRIEHOEK - Eskom and the Emfuleni Local Municipality have reached an agreement relating to the attachment of the bank accounts, and to ensure that the municipality can pay salaries to its employees. The municipality owes the power utility eight-billion-rand, which accounts for 10% of the total amount owed by municipalities across the country. Eskom’s Gauteng spokesperson, Amanda Qithi, says Emfuleni has also signed the distribution agency agreement with the power utility, as instructed by the Pretoria High Court.
Meanwhile, the DA in Gauteng demands that premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo, present a workable plan to improve Emfuleni Municipality’s finances. This is despite the municipality reaching an agreement with Eskom regarding its outstanding debt, which totals over eight-billion-rand. The DA’s, Solly Msimanga, says residents should not bear the consequences of unresolved financial issues and inadequate service delivery.
