VANDERBIJLPARK - The Emfuleni Local Municipality has strongly denied claims that its speed-enforcement equipment was repossessed due to non-payment. These allegations, raised by the Freedom Front Plus and echoed across media platforms, accused the municipality of mismanagement and a collapse in service delivery. In a statement, Acting Communications Manager Makhosonke Sangweni slammed the claims as “outright misrepresentation” and “peerless disinformation". ELM clarified that the removal of speed cameras followed the natural end of a three-year contract, not financial failure. A new service provider has since taken over, with data capture resuming on 15 July and over 4,500 speeding cases recorded. The municipality confirmed new staff, equipment installations, mobile camera rollouts, and that 70 handheld devices are expected by 6 August. ELM emphasized that traffic officers continue issuing summonses, and speed enforcement is fully operational. The municipality called on media to report responsibly and to seek comment before publishing unverified claims.
