SASOLBURG - A man pretending to be a municipal official has been targeting liquor outlets in Zamdela, Metsimaholo, demanding bribes during unauthorised inspections. The impersonator was caught at a local tavern, but according to the Free State Liquor Traders Association, he was later released by police. The Metsimaholo Local Municipality distanced itself from the individual, warning residents to be cautious of such fraudsters. Municipal spokesperson Dr Gino Alberts emphasized that no official is permitted to solicit money and urged the public to report suspicious activity to SAPS or verify directly with the municipality. The Liquor Traders Association, led by Khulu Radebe, condemned the suspect’s release, highlighting that impersonating a municipal official constitutes fraud under Section 40(1)(b) of the Criminal Procedure Act. The association has formally written to IPID, the Zamdela Police Station, and the Mayor to demand accountability and corrective action, calling the release a “blatant dereliction of duty.” Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any attempts at bribery immediately.
