Food and alcohol the main contributors to inflation increase

VAAL TRIANGLE - Annual consumer price inflation shot up to 5.4% last month in comparison to the figure of 4.8% in August. This is the second consecutive monthly increase and brings the rate back to the level of June. The main contributors are listed as food and non-alcoholic beverages, which showed an 8.1% year-on-year increase, as well as housing and utilities, miscellaneous goods and services, and transport. Economists say the higher inflation may prompt the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy committee to raise interest rates.
