VAAL TRIANGLE - Gauteng Provincial Legislature's Community Safety Committee has urged immediate action on school safety as schools reopen today. The Committee has demanded urgent implementation of school safety measures outlined in the Focused Intervention Study. The report highlights violence, and weapons in schools. Recommendations include enhanced searches, increased security personnel, and multidisciplinary anti-drug strategies. Chairperson Bandile Masuku says the departments have until 28 February to report progress.

Meanwhile, government says it has worked hard to create an enabling learning environment which includes eradicating mud schools, pit latrine toilets and providing good quality classrooms. The Department of Basic Education has set a deadline of 31 March 2025 to eradicate all remaining identified pit latrine toilets in schools nationwide. Government Communication and Information System’s spokesperson, Kgomotso Ranoto, says the matric class of 2024 has benefited from an education system that is more inclusive and better resourced.
