SEDIBENG - The battle for the Sedibeng District Municipality mayoral position intensifies as the ANC and DA prepare for a showdown following Wednesday’s chaotic council meeting. The meeting, meant to elect a new mayor after the ousting of Lerato Maloka, was disrupted when teargas was released in the chambers. DA Sedibeng leader Sibusiso Dyonase claims the incident was a delaying tactic by the ANC. A police investigation is underway to determine who caused the disruption. Lerato Maloka was removed from her position as mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality two weeks before the meeting. This was through a motion of no confidence tabled by the DA, with 26 councillors voting in favour of her removal and 21 against. Maloka has been accused of mismanaged funds and neglected her duties. The upcoming battle for control between the ANC and DA is expected to be intense. Some ANC members are pushing for Maloka’s return, while others are determined to prevent her re-election. The DA is ready to put forward its own candidate, revealing the name on election day. Another council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday to elect a new mayor.
