VEREENIGING - The International Trade Administration of South Africa has announced a review of the steel tariff structure following ArcelorMittal South Africa’s decision to shut its Newcastle operations in KwaZulu-Natal. Chief commissioner Ayabonga Cawe confirmed efforts to explore alternatives, including regulating scrap metal exports and investigating trade remedies for injurious import competition. Cawe described the closure decision as regrettable but continues seeking solutions to capacitate under-utilisation challenges. He confirmed that recommendations on these measures will be submitted to the minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau.
