VEREENIGING - Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has ordered the provincial human settlements department to urgently address the dire sanitation crisis in Emfuleni’s informal settlements. This comes after EWN reports revealed that portable toilets in the Ramaphosa informal settlement in Vereeniging had not been cleaned for four months, leading to worm infestations and severe health risks. The crisis erupted after the Gauteng government withdrew funding for the mobile toilet maintenance programme. Although Emfuleni Municipality was notified of the funding cut, it claims it lacks the financial capacity to sustain the service. Premier Lesufi condemned the situation as a human rights violation. He has committed to ensuring that resources are redirected to resolve the issue, highlighting the ongoing service delivery failures within the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
