MIDVAAL - The Midvaal Local Municipality has issued a reminder to encourage its community to exercise responsible behaviour when it comes to the use of fireworks. The municipality said in a notice that as the holiday season approaches, this timely reminder aims a sense of mutual respect amongst neighbours and ensure the safety and well-being of all, including everyone’s beloved animal companions. Midvaal said it is important to note that the issue of fireworks and regulations falls within the jurisdiction of the South African Police Service (SAPS), specifically the handling and control of explosives. As such, community members are urged to adhere to current bylaws and exercise caution when handling fireworks. The municipality says it is essential to note that public spaces such as parks, streets, shopping malls, and health institutions are off-limits for fireworks. Setting off fireworks within 500m of hospitals, clinics, petrol stations, nursing homes, old age homes, or animal welfare organisations is strictly prohibited. Fireworks are only permitted in designated areas, with permits obtained from the SAPS, and using them in crowded spaces or indoors is strictly prohibited.
