VANDERBIJLPARK - Emfuleni Local Municipality employees face delayed salary payments after Eskom attached the municipality’s bank accounts to recover an R8-billion debt. The attachment comes after Emfuleni failed to comply with Eskom’s debt relief programme. The municipality informed staff, councillors, and service providers not to panic, stating that an urgent court application has been filed on 19 September to lift the attachments. Eskom has however until 30 September to respond to this application. Meanwhile, Eskom confirmed the municipality is no longer eligible for the Municipal Finance Management Act’s debt relief programme due to repeated violations, leading to the attachment of four bank accounts to ensure direct payment for electricity services. Eskom emphasized it had exhausted all avenues to recover the debt, which has accumulated since 2018.
