One fatality recorded in Gauteng amid M-pox outbreak

VAAL TRIANGLE - The Department of Health has ramped up efforts to curb the spread of M-pox, following the confirmation of five cases and one fatality. The one fatality occurred in Gauteng. The deceased, a 37-year-old male, passed away on Monday, at Tembisa Hospital. The department is actively working on contact tracing, case finding, and raising awareness to prevent further spread of the virus. The department is collaborating with HIV programmes and key organisations to raise awareness. Briefing the media, minister of Health Joe Phaahla says Tecovirimat, an antiviral medication, has been secured for severe cases through World Health Organisation donations. Phaahla says enhanced risk communication and community engagement are being implemented to prevent further spread and ensure early diagnosis and treatment.
